Zoom call with Peter Thomas and SVL

On Wednesday the 10th of March at 8:15am I joined a zoom call with Peter Thomas who discussed academic and analyzing writing.

We discussed how when you first read a piece of text, it's good to pick out what you know and understand first and then discuss that. then re read the text and take notes of the other sections that you didn't notice the first time round or quite understand.

He mentioned that writing a piece of academic writing broken down, is simply:

1. Tell them what you're gonna say

2. Then say it

3. Then say what you talked

He mentioned the structure for an academic essay is:

Introduction (roughly 200 Words)

- What? what the focus is in the topic

- Why? why is this relevant?

- How? how i've organized my text

Context

- Define the themes

- Give background about examples

Analysis

- Example one - Theme A,B,C

- Example two - Theme A,B,C

- Example three - Theme A,B,C

Conclusion

- What? This is what I have found. This is what I mean.

Structure for Theme - Based essay

The same as before however the analysis is:

Helen strongly suggested we use the Theme - Based structure of writing for this course.

Lastly myself (mod 2) Logan (mod 1) And Emily (mod 2), we are your student voice leaders. Next Friday we have a meeting with the supervisors and on the 24th we have a meeting with the University to voice everyone's thoughts on the course. We have been asked to gather some feedback from you all to discuss at these meetings, therefore we kindly ask you to message us with your thoughts and ideas for us to relay. These can be positive and any ideas for improvements are welcome :)

Also Helen asked us if we preferred using zoom for the group discussions compared to Skype, which is what we were previously using.

We look forward to hearing from you all and relaying the discussion!

  1. Great summary of the workshop! It's very clear and great to remeber all the key points Peter shared!

Also great idea about sharing the student voice post on your blog! I will do the same, as its a great way to remind people and if anyone missed it from the Facebook Post too!

  2. Hi Chloe,
Tank for this Blog -I also attended the workshop but the evening one. Thank you for sharing these tips in a clear and concise way, and it really helps to see some of these things written down again in kind of normal understandable language! (not that what Peter said was overly complicated or academic) But it helps to see it kind of in your own words. So thank you!
The part of your blog that I will take away with me is

"1. Tell them what you're gonna say
    2. Then say it
    3. Then say what you talked

He mentioned the structure for an academic essay is:
    Introduction (roughly 200 Words)
    - What? what the focus is in the topic
    - Why? why is this relevant?
    - How? how i've organized my text
stands out to me and is relevant I think to myself "

The first three points are especially useful, yes! That's exactly what we've got to do isn't it!? But sometimes reading the handbook I lose sight of the absolute basic form this easy should take. I've actually written tis part of your blog down into my handwritten notes to remind myself of it later, hope that's ok!? :)
Thank you for this and I wish you all the best with your work. If I think of any feedback for you to pass on I will contact you. Here's my blog too in case there's any bits that are interesting to you.
