My 1-2-1 with my supervisor "Little wonders!"

Yesterday i had my 1-2-1 with Helen my supervisor and it went really well.

I express to her that i am currently finding my question boring and i don't seem to be interested enough to research further. However i express to her that i have come up with a few other questions and asked if i could run them by her and ask for her thoughts on them.

After a few questions, we came to a decision on what my question should roughly be and the direction i should be heading.

i've decided to look into the language and ethics when it comes to casting breakdowns and procedures. whilst research digital theatre and i kept coming back to the idea of casting and how it is currently done during these times of Covid-19!

This then raised more questions of who decides what the casting breakdowns will be? Who writes the language to describe the type of actor they are looking for? Recently when i have been receiving castings from my agent i have looked at the description of the role deeper (height, gender, race etc) and read exactly what they are looking for, instead of just reading what they are asking me to do and the overall description of the role.

Since doing this i have realised that the language used to describe the type of actor they are looking for has changed and in my eyes for the better.

The use of the correct pronouns and ethnicity characteristics is a massive improvement, compared to what it was like even just a year ago.

So that sparked a "little wonder" and made me want to look into this further.

Also with the technology side of casting. I want to look and question how much that has changed since the pandemic i.e zoom, self tapes, skype etc.

Has casting moved with the times?

Who are these so called giants that decide what type of actor should play the role they are casting for?

So overall i am feeling a lot more confident with where i am going to take this module and how it correlates to my everyday professional practice.

If anyone has any thoughts on this topic matter, please comment below! I would love to hear your opinions on this and if you have any flags that have been raised when it comes to casting breakdowns and procedures, please do let a gal know!

  1. Hi Chloe, thats great it seems like you had a really productive 1 2 1 with Helen! I remember one thing they told us at the beginning was the make sure we were interested in our topics as we will be with them until the end of module 3, so its wise that you were honest and have found a new topic to focus on! They also did say our question would change many times throughout the reading part of this module! One thing that the cruise company I work for has changed during the pandemic, is they have created a website where each company member and any potential auditionees are to create an online profile, which includes your head shots/ body shots, show reels and CV. This I am presuming is a way for them to still audition globally without the restrictions on the pandemic. This is also a good data base that they will have to have everything saved electronically and will be able to set filters on heights etc. Good luck with the research!

  2. Hi Chloe, great blog, it sounds like you've really hit a topic that interests you and has a lot of relevance to your practice. I think the question about who decides what type of actor plays a role is really interesting - is this just the caster's 'vision' or does it have more to do with their own backgrounds/experiences/prejudices/experience of prejudice etc ? Or is their vision formed as a result of these - their 'vision' is a product of their lens if you will ?
Looking at casting is really interesting with all the adaptations made for covid and it will be interesting to look at how these experiences will shape the future of casting.
    Good luck with it! x

    1. Hi Roanne, Thank you for you comment. Yes i agree, it is such a wide topic, with many themes and areas to look into. Casting has changed so much due to covid and its interesting to compare that to the old way of casting and if this new way is going to stay after covid or will it go back to how it was? I look forward to reading your future blog. Best Chloe x

  3. This is such an interesting topic Chloe, I am glad that you had an effective tutorial and have found an area that interests you. I haven't attended an audition for over a year now, so it's great to hear that you have noticed a difference in casting descriptions. Hopefully this will allow performers to embrace their true identity more, which in the long run would also help with their confidence and mental health. I remember seeing the advert for the Virgin Cruises and being pleasantly surprised that they were looking for a diversity of performers. Although they specified they were looking for certain 'types', they also said that they were open to considering everyone, which I thought was really cool! I am excited to hear about where your research will take you! x
