The Social Dilemma

So today is Tuesday the 29th of September and I have been struggling with a question to start researching.

This is because I know it has to do with my professional practice and it has to be able to help my professional practice. However because of the current circumstances with the musical theatre industry due to covid-19, I have no idea where my professional practice will be in 6 months time.

I was listening to Niall Breslin’s podcast this morning; (https://open.spotify.com/show/7pqSBiqn7j1SNh3ZXn3Vqf)

Like I do every morning and his topic for this week, is exploring how we as humans can bring more empathy into the digital world. What he was discussing in today's podcast, was when he started to get trolled online.

Definition of trolling - Urban Dictionary

Trolling – (verb), as it relates to internet, is the deliberate act, (by a Troll – noun or adjective), of making random unsolicited and/or controversial comments on various internet forums with the intent to provoke an emotional knee jerk reaction from unsuspecting readers to engage in a fight or argument

He expressed how it made him feel. Then for some reason something just clicked.

I realised that our industry is so dependent on the digital world at the moment. The only way to access the arts, is via digital appliances or programmes. Even the show I am currently performing in, uses new technology to keep cast and audiences safe whilst enjoying a piece of theatre.

Then I had a sudden realisation that, the one thing that will not change with my professional practice is the use of technology. Everything I do and will do will revolve around that.

So I am going to research the digital world in detail and how that correlates with my professional practice. Hopefully this will lead into some sort of question.

I've already watched the social dilemma last week and I have my questions and opinions on that, so I will definitely look into that further.

How do you feel about technology within our industry? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time,

CG xoxo
